Reliability is:
Probability quantitative approach
Attribute (feature, capability) qualitative approach
that parts, components, products or systems to fulfill their functions for which they were designed without failures with previously known operating restrictions, for a given time interval and with a given trust level.
Reliability engineering offers the theoretical methods and practical techniques according to the probability and the capacity of parts, components, equipment, products and systems to fulfill their functions for which they were designed and putted in practice, for given operating restrictions and with established trust levels can be specified, anticipated, designed, tested, demonstrated including the conditions to be preserved, packed, transported and finally operated and monitored as well the information transferred to those involved and interested.
The reliability study areas:
Failures analysis (roots, origin and development processes, mitigation methods)
Quantitative evaluation of time dependent behaviour of products as a function of internal and external influencing factors
Methods and models for reliability computing and estimation based on specific tests and operating monitoring techniques
Technical and technological methods for design and operation to maintain and increase the reliability of systems and their components
Methods to select and compute the reliability data for products
Calculation of optimal reliability indices.
