I. Location

Transylvania is a historical region in the central part of Romania. Bounded on the east and south by the Carpathian mountain range, historical Transylvania extended in the west to the Apuseni Mountains; however, the term sometimes encompasses not only Transylvania proper, but also the historical regions of Crișana, Maramureș, and Romanian part of Banat. The region of Transylvania is known for the scenic beauty of its Carpathian landscape and its rich history

In Romanian, the region is known as Ardeal or Transilvania

Transylvania spreads over an area of 100,293 km ² representing about 45% of the country’s entire surface while the number of people living in this area represents a third of Romania’s inhabitants

This region is mainly predominant by mountains and hills forming the picturesque rustic image of Transylvania loved by so many.

II. Transportation to and from the place

Most visitors land in Bucharest. From there you have the choice of hiring a car or taking a plane or a train to one of the towns or cities. There are daily trains from/to Bucharest to the main cities in the region.

By air

Major airports located in:

 By train

Main train stations in Transylvania:

Alba Iulia, Bistrita, Brasov, Cluj Napoca, Medias, Miercurea Ciuc, Sebes,

Sfantu Gheorghe, Sibiu, Sighisoara, Targu Mures

III. Climate

Transylvania has a continental climate. This means that precipitation is not very abundant (500-800 mm), the winters are cold and the summers are hot.

Extreme temperatures can approach 40 degrees in the summer (but not quite reach it), and descend below 30 in the winter (especially in the eastern parts).

The climate can vary from region to region as Transylvania is a plateau surrounded by mountains.

The cold air can be "stuck" in the lower parts in the winter and the cold weather can last for a long time.

IV. Accommodation

There are various options for staying in Transylvania depending on which region you would like to explore the most. The accommodation ranges from quality modern hotels to homely guest-houses. There are also ski chalets, and for something really special, you can be the personal guest of a Hungarian Count in comfortable, beautifully-restored, traditional accommodation, in Covasna County.

Next, I will suggest some examples of accomodation options in the main counties of Transylvania.

In Alba County you can stay at Elisabeta Villa***. It is situated in the immediate vicinity of the Castle Stadium and ensures you qualified and friendly personnel, who are at your disposal 24 hours a day.The Restaurant and tavern offers you romanian and international gastronomic specialities, selected wines and intimate atmosphere. There you can find 17 rooms for 29 persons
