1. Presentation of the problem
Since ancient times, humanity has made various predictions regarding the end of the world based on predictions of ancient civilizations, religious beliefs or scientific evidence. In modern times, the end of the world has been exploited in mass media due to various reasons such as globalization, environmental changes, predictions of the Mayan civilization or Nostradamus, and signs from the Bible.
Possibly one of the biggest controversies in end of the world phenomena is the year 2012. Many different media types such as movies, television, books and websites, have focused upon the year 2012. Although the Bible doesn’t predict the exact date of the end of the world religious followers believe that we can already see signs from the Bible that the end is near. Scientists fear scenarios such as solar flaring, polar shifts, an alignment of planets, winter solstice, collision with Nibiru, a meteor strike, or the effects of global warming in 2012. There are also independent thinkers who believe in the Mayan calendar that ends in 2012, therefore the world also will be destroyed in this year. All of them try to persuade the audience that their information is factual.
In the confusion regarding the end of the world, has media influenced our susceptible society into believing that predictions of the future are indeed facts- What do people believe is really going to happen in 2012-
2. Literature review
Our life is characterized, among other things, by the massive amount of information we receive every day. Because of the frequency, the quantity and also the simplicity of the messages spread by the mass-media, they have become just as familiar to us as food, household things or friends. Our daily routine is dictated by the media. In the modern society, we have become to consider that life without the media is meaningless.
In this research we studied the impact of mass communication, in particularly the agenda setting effect, the dependency theory and the cultivation model, some of the most important theories in understanding mass communication. As a study case for our research we analyzed if the movie 2012 has changed people’s beliefs about the end of the world.
The effects of mass communication
Mass media responds to the needs and aspirations of individuals and collectivities, and its shaped by their demands or expectations, but in the same time, the media influences the social life, changing the actions of individuals and groups. The comprehension of the effects of mass media is regarded as a very important issue by the researchers in the field of mass communication. They have determined that the effects of mass media can touch the level of knowledge, emotions, attitudes and behavior of a person, group, institution, or the entire society; that the effects are intentional or non-intentional, on a long or short term.
The influence of mass media can lead to agreement, identification or internalisation of values or meanings transmitted by media. Agreement means to consciously accept the influence of a message. Identification involves assuming the values promoted by the media and, as a concequence, imitating the behavior promoted. The maximum effectiveness in the process of influence is internalisation; requires assimilating the values, meanings and behaviors promoted by the media and making them your personal world outlook.
Agenda setting effect
One of the effects of mass communication is the agenda setting. In the modern society, mass media represents the dominant tehnique of social communication, offering informations, facts and ideas to people every day. Along with the information, the journalists also offer semnifications, suggestions of how to interpret the information, shaping a certain ’imagine’ of the world.
