The modern English is often called “lingua franca”, a global language, because is the first language dominated on an international scale in domains such as communication, science, business, air force, entertainment, radio and diplomacy.

English is a language that developed in England during the Anglo-Saxon era. As a result of the military, economic, scientific, political, and cultural influence of the British Empire during the 18th, 19th, and early 20th centuries, and of the United States since the mid 20th century, it has become the lingua franca in many parts of the world. It is used extensively as a second language and as an official language in Commonwealth countries and many international organisations.

“A language is a dialect with an army and a war marine.”

Joshua A. Fishman

The main reason why English has so easily and quickly spread was the influence of the United Kingdom.

Today, wherever you may go, you will find that pupils learn English at school even though they are Chinese, Japanese, Romanian, Indian etc.

Although English is not an official language in many countries, nowadays it is the most studied as a second language all over the world.

English is a language that absorbs aspects of cultures in the entire world, as its influence is getting bigger.

The most interesting thing about English is that until the beginning of the 19th century, it had borrowed many words from Latin ,Greek, French and other Nordic countries, but, in the present , it’s a language that lends its words to other languages.

“The language is the vehicle that takes my thoughts in the air, the heart and the thoughts of the one next to me.” Victor Eftimiu
