Google a story that will continue for years to come

One may think of Google only as a search engine, but this is not entirely true, Google is more than that, in fact we may say that its mission “is to organize the world’s information and make it universally accessible and useful”. People could say that Google is an advertising company who services the broader advertising industry but also has always focused on solving problems. Google is a cultural phenomenon.

From Gutenberg phenomenon until now no other invention has succeeded to offer the power and the access to all the information millions of people around the globe are enjoying because of Google search engine. Beside the colored and childish logo, Google is the magician that answers billions of questions daily and interflowing with the daily routine, it became an all-important friend. People can use it in more than 100 languages and they now associate Google with Internet. The young, the grown-ups, the children rely so much on Google that they can not image a world where it doesn’t exist or the world before Google. The brand is highly appreciated both by IT specialist and amateurs or simply users and they consider Google a part of their personality: “I’m a Google guy!”. The Google phenomenon grew gradually due to recommendations from users who were pleased with the results generated and so they attracted millions of other people. At its beginnings Yahoo!, Altavista and some other successfully online companies refused to buy the small search engine Google for the sum of 1 million $. Now it’s worth over 100 billion $.

Google’s success is owed to its co-founders Larry Page and Segey Brin together motivating the huge team of genius mathematicians, engineers and technologies that lay behind Google phenomenon. The essence of the brand Google is the constant innovation and the continuous challenge to be the best.

Larry Page, co-founder of Google, was born in a Jewish family in 1973 in East Lansing, Michigan. Due to the fact that his parents were computer science professors at Michigan University, at the age of six years old he became interested in technology and in elementary school he turned in an assignment from a word processor. Also because of his brother he started to take thing apart and at the age of 12 discovered he had a great interest in technology and business and knew he was going to start a company eventually. Page attended the Okemos Montessori School in Okemos, Michigan from 1975 to 1979, and graduated from East Lansing High School in 1991. He holds a Bachelor of Science degree in computer engineering from the University of Michigan with honors and a Masters degree in Computer Science from Stanford University. While at the University of Michigan, “Page created an inkjet printer made of Lego bricks, served as the president of the HKN, and was a member of the solar car team.

After he enrolled at Stanford University for a Ph.D program in computer science he began searching for a dissertation theme. His supervisor Terry Winograd encouraged him to pursue his idea in exploring the mathematical properties of the World Wide Web. Later on his research project, nicknamed “BackRub” was soon joined by Sergey Brin, another Pd.D student at Stanford.

Sergey Brin, the other co-founder of Google, was born in 1973 in Moscow, Russia and along with his family emigrated to America at age of six. He is the son of Michael Brin and Eugenia Brin, both graduates of Moscow State University and now his father is a mathematics professor at the University of Maryland and his mother is a research scientist at NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center.

When they were living in Russia, Michael Brin, his father, decided that it was time to move in America due to the fact that they were Jews and the education system available in 1979 could not offer a good education for his son. Jews were excluded from the physics department and Michael Brin was forced to change his major to mathematics. In 1978 they formally applied for a visa to America but this was not easy and his father was immediately fired. While they were waiting for a response his parents were forced to take temporary jobs and his father began teaching himself little Sergey computer programming. Sergey attended grade school at Paint Branch Montessori School in Adelphi, Maryland, but he received further education at home; his father, a professor in the department of mathematics at the University of Maryland, nurtured his interest in mathematics and his family helped him retain his Russian-language skills. In 1990, after having attended Eleanor Roosevelt High School, Brin enrolled in the University of Maryland, College Park to study computer science and mathematics, where he received his Bachelor of Science degree in 1993 with honors. Brin began his graduate study in Computer Science at Stanford University on a graduate fellowship from the National Science Foundation. During his Pd.D studies at Stanford he meets Larry Page and together, the pair authored what is widely considered their seminal contribution, a paper entitled “The Anatomy of a Large-Scale Hypertextual Web Search Engine”.
